20 things to do in Southport, UK

20 things to do in Southport, UK | PACK THE SUITCASES

After a gorgeous autumnal day out there, I decided to write up some of the best things to do in Southport. I grew up in a village near to Southport, so I spent a lot of time there when I was younger and used to know it really well. But since I moved away over 10 years ago, SO much has changed. I’ve only ever been back on flying visits rather than for a full day out (usually just drunken evenings to be honest). So returning for a day in Southport this autumn was like visiting an entirely new town for me.

If you don’t know it, Southport (or ‘Sowie’ as locals used to call it – possibly still do) is a seaside town in the North West. It was a popular Victorian holiday destination and like most coastal towns, has had its fair share of shops closing down and an air of faded grandeur. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised to return, sober and in the cold light of day, to find it’s actually a really nice day out now. Southport even has pockets of real brilliance in the form of art, craft beer and food.

Anyway, onto 20 things to do in Southport – in no particular order…

Circus Lane, Edinburgh: the best photo spot | PACK THE SUITCASES

Circus Lane, Edinburgh is my new favourite spot in the city for a quiet walk and some lovely photographs.

This is one thing I really love about Edinburgh and one of the many reasons I keep going back over the years: no matter how many times I’ve been, there’s always another little hidden gem to discover. Brilliant stuff.

So I thought I’d whack out this short post about Circus Lane, Edinburgh with a bit of useful information if you’re planning a visit to it while you’re in Edinburgh…

10 things to do in Stockport: a town of vegan eats and vintage treats

Things to do in Stockport UK | PACK THE SUITCASES

I thought I’d put together this little list of some of my favourite things to do in Stockport, one of the 2 nearest large towns to where I currently live (the other is Macclesfield, which I also recommend). Stockport is often overshadowed by the city of Manchester being so close to it, but it actually has some brilliant places to eat and drink as well as some lovely vintage shops worth seeking out. Unfortunately, it also has a fairly run down shopping area, a generic retail park and a brand new chain restaurant/cinema complex, so this can give a negative first impression. I wasn’t taken with it at all when we first visited. It wasn’t until we ventured to one of the food events on that I found all the little hidden gems round the old town and lovely market area and started to see a different side to Stockport.

So here are a few things to do in Stockport that I take friends to when they come for a visit or that I recommend to people who are in the area…

Isle of Man travel guide: things to do, where to eat, places to see

Isle of Man travel guide | PACK THE SUITCASES

The Isle of Man is a totally underrated little island – like a mini version of mainland Britain, with all of its different landscapes on a small scale. It has a really varied coastline (craggy, sandy, pebbly, shelly – every flavour of beach is available). Also, it has plenty of mountains, forests, cute towns and villages. The Manx scenery rivals that of the Lake District and Scotland but it doesn’t have the volume of tourists, which makes it much better. It’s often even quiet enough for you to get beaches or glens entirely to yourself. And we all know that there is nothing better than being away from other people.

So, in no particular order, here’s our picks of the best places to see and things to do on the Isle of Man…

During our latest trip to Edinburgh, we had a day exploring the Dean Village and Stockbridge area. This part of town isn’t exactly new to us, but we managed to uncover things we’ve not seen before.

Here’s some things to do in Stockbridge and Dean Village – and how you could spend a day there…

Things to do in North Berwick, Scotland: a pretty seaside town

Things to do in North Berwick, Scotland: a pretty seaside town | PACK THE SUITCASES

Visiting North Berwick as a day trip from Edinburgh is one of our favourites. It’s only 30 minutes from Edinburgh on the train so is ideal for a day out. But we love this cute seaside town so much that we decided it deserved more than a day trip this time. So this summer, we booked to stay in North Berwick for three nights and really got to know it.

Here’s what there is to see, do and eat in North Berwick for a short break…
