How to do a Ljubljana to Zagreb train adventure: one-week itinerary

Here’s my Ljubljana to Zagreb train trip itinerary, featuring the best things to see in both these amazing cities and how to travel between them. You could do this itinerary either way. I chose to start off in Ljubljana because it worked better for our flights. But you could easily do Zagreb to Ljubljana too. Just flip reverse it, much like Blazin’ Squad (that noughties cultural reference will be lost on most of my readers, but I’m going with it).

I’d recommend spending slightly more time in Ljubljana than Zagreb. Although I enjoyed both cities, Ljubljana was an absolute fairytale place and I completely fell in love with it.

Here are 5 brilliant places to eat in Ljubljana, Slovenia. We ate really well and really cheaply during our short break in the city, which you can read about in our post all about Ljubljana. I thought I’d list our favourite restaurants and cafés separately from our guide to the city, because the food was so good that it deserves its own post. They all have veggie or pescetarian options (which is what we eat most of the time), but almost all served meat too. Not once did we eat anything crap and we always felt like we’d got really good value for money.

A fairytale city break in Ljubljana, Slovenia | PACK THE SUITCASES

We had a brilliant short city break in Ljubljana, Slovenia in autumn time. I’m not sure if it was the amazing food, the riverside café culture or the fairytale beauty of the whole city swathed in autumn light that made us fall in love with it, but we’ll definitely be back. On the way home, we declared it was our new favourite European city, which is high praise indeed.

We visited Ljubljana as part of a multi-destination holiday: three days in Ljubljana and three days in Zagreb, Croatia – with a brilliant train journey between them (posts on that coming soon).
